Attention: All Santa Fe makers, tinkerers, designers, inventors, entrepreneurs and creators –
MIX, Los Alamos National Bank and the Santa Fe Community College announce a new Made by MIX challenge.
Enter your concept, design or product, and win a chance to see it manufactured and launched for sale in the coming holiday season.

Acceptable entries include anything Santa Fe’s most inventive self-starters dream up:

• clothing
• toys
• technology
• household items
• pet accoutrement
• sports accessories
• you tell us what you want to make!

CONTEST PERIOD
MIX will begin accepting submissions after the August 18 Makers MIX at the Santa Fe Children’s Museum. The final deadline to submit a product proposal will be September 15 (by 6pm). Production must be finished in time to place products in participating retails by Black Friday, November 25.
Judges will choose a winner or winners based on the following criteria:

PRODUCTION PLAN
How will product go from prototype to production? How many items will you produce and how will you have them produced? By factory? A specialty fabricator? By hand? Through a craft cooperative? Is your production run and timing realistic?

VIABILITY
Is your product ready for market? How well conceived is it, how well represented is it by your prototype/ concept sketch?

TARGET MARKET
Is your product targeted toward a clear demographic? Is there a demonstrated need or desire for which your product fills a particular niche?

MEANS OF MANUFACTURE
Are you outsourcing the production overseas or have you found an inventive way to implement manufacture locally or regionally? Regional production is important to us, but the quality and viability of your product is more important. Getting it made matters more than where you get it made.

PRICE POINT
Is your product well-priced to be attractive in a challenging economy while still offering a return for both yourself and a retailer? Does your price point match your production plan to represent a good ROI? Products in the $25-range are encouraged. If your product will cost more, this should be justified in your proposal.

INGENUITY/INNOVATION
How original and innovative is your product? It doesn’t have to be weird to be original; just smart and well-designed.

PRIZES
The cash award is specifically to fund the production of your product. It will be awarded in a bank account at Los Alamos National Bank. MIX will facilitate the placement of winning products with a number of local retailers and will help negotiate the profit split between producers and retailers. Any net income earned after the sale of products will be kept by the maker.
